2009 Rolex Release – New Rolex Datejust II Review

Lily Allen asked:

Rolex finally unveiled Date-Just II at Baselworld 2009 as all Rolex watches lovers expected. Though Baselworld 2009 just recently closed, there already appears hundreds of articles about Rolex 2009 new releases. Rolex Date-Just II, in particular, draws great attention with some noticeable changes.

Rolex came with four 41mm Date-Just II models and eight 36mm Date-Just II models at Baselworld 2009. Rolex men’s watch first had 41mm model on Day-Date II in 2008, this year was Date-Just II’s turn. One Two-Tone 41mm Datejust II model uses green theme Roman numbers and a baton marker with luminescence at 9 o’clock. The green elements first appeared at Basel 2004. GMT Master II, Anniversary Submariner, and Milgauss 116400GV are all beneficiaries of green elements. Personally, I love green which is fresh and vivid. But I never thought it could display its charm on watches till Rolex made it true. Two of other Rolex Date-Just II models apply Arabic markers. One in two-tone and the other in white gold and stainless steel. Noticeable is that the arabic numerals on white gold version presents something purple. The last 41mm Date-Just II keeps more tradition looking with baton markers. I am a little disappointed about the combination of fluted bezels and Oyster bracelet on these four models. In eyes of mine, fluted bezels goes better with Jubillee bracelet.

Female Rolex watches lovers may cheer as they are spoiled with eight 36mm Date-Just II this year. Obviously, Now Date-Just now tries to attract more female customers. In another word, Rolex Date-Just now is being transformed from a men’s watch line to a unisex watch line. As a woman, these Date-Just II of feminine slant do take my breath away. And my favorite model is the one features grey dial and flower patterns.

What’s the cheapest you can buy a Rolex watch? What’s the most expensive in the world?

6 Defining Characteristics Of Tag Heuer Sports Timepieces

Patrick C Bedford asked:

Every watch company on the market has their own style and characteristics that sum them up. Many have similar models or certain dials they use for people to identify them by. But few have as many defining characteristics as Tag Heuer Sports timepieces. Here are 6 characteristics you can find with many Tag Heuer watches.

1. The first characteristic you will find is the unidirectional turning bezel with minutes scale. Along with this there are six studs for the best diving-glove grip possible. This makes it clearly visible to see the dial and allows for an incredible grip.

2. Whether you are deep-sea diving or playing basketball, you never want to have a luxurious watch like a Tag Heuer sports watch fall off of your wrist. A defining characteristic about the sports watches is the double safety clasp found on many. This assures you your watch is safe on your wrist regardless of what activity you are participating in.

3. A popular activity amongst sporty people is swimming, which is what makes these timepieces so convenient for the average swimmer. There is a remarkable 300 meter water resistance allowing you to go the distance with your watch.

4. To further ensure your watch is water resistant, there is a screw-in crown to protect your watch. A screw-in crown is a watch winding crown that screws tightly to the case of the watch on a tube to ensure extreme water resistance.

5. To give you the finest quality and most scratch-resistance possible, there is sapphire-crystal with an anti-reflective treatment.

6. The last defining characteristic you can find on Tag Heuer sports timepieces is luminescent hands and indexes.

It is not often that you can find a watch company that remains consistent with their timepieces. Obviously you want variety amongst the different models and watches, but it is nice to have defining characteristics between certain styles. Tag Heuer sports watches have become iconic for their amazing elegance, yet still sporty watches. There are few companies on the market that achieve what Tag Heuer does, and a large part has to do with the defining characteristics they have to offer year after year.

Even with new models coming out, the characteristics seem to remain the same. There will be new features, new colors, and new gadgets to play with on the newer models. But you can expect to find the same six characteristics in virtually every sport watch Tag Heuer has to offer.

A Review of Popular Watch Winders

Marcus Peterson asked:

Finding the perfect watch winder to meet your needs is as easy as researching your options. How much is your timepiece worth, both in monetary and sentimental value? Do you want a simple, functional storage unit? Do you prefer an elaborate display case with all of the features available? These are questions you should ask yourself while determining which is the best watch winder.

The Orbita watch winder is made in the U.S. and is considered one of the best watch winders available. It can be set to move at 500, 650, 800 and 950 turns per day. This particular brand has an auto-reverse feature and has a battery life of anywhere from 6-24 months. The Orbita watch winder is one of the less expensive models in their range but runs very quietly and does not over wind automatic watches. Orbita offers options of single, double and higher multiple heads to house the pieces and many of their products allow for programming of the turns per day. This company has also released a model that holds up to 24 watches at once and each watch can be set for different turns per day; this model has a retail value of $20,000.

Rolex also has a variety of watch winders available. These watch winders come in a variety of options from simple to beautifully crafted and elaborate. Most models can encase anywhere from one to ten watches in a single box. It is recommended that if you are unsure of the specifications of a particular brand of watch winders, you should consult with a jeweler or watch expert to help narrow your search.

The Steinhausen watch winder is a favorite among collectors. As with the other top brands, Steinhausen offers beautifully constructed watch winders with precise engineering. Designed to slowly, delicately and consistently wind your watch, Steinhausen guarantees your watch will be carefully wound, easily displayed and ready to wear at a moment’s notice. This brand of watch winder is generally equipped with a glass front for easy viewing and can keep your timepiece protected from dust. Owners of the Steinhausen watch winder enjoy the ability to store up to four watches in the same case and like that the motor runs very quietly.

Since 1834, Wolf Watches has practiced to perfect its winding products. Because of the careful design and elegance of these watch winders, Wolf has become a favorite among collectors. One of the newer products, Module 2.0, is capable of winding in three different directions: clockwise, counterclockwise or bi-directionally. This product also has a setting in which the watch is allowed to “sleep”; many collectors believe this to be a critical stage for any self-winding watch in order simulate normal wear (i.e. winding and unwinding). Consistent over winding can damage your treasured watch. This is among the many reasons people enjoy the features of the Wolf watch winder.
The Underwood watch winder also offers many appealing features. The Rotogalble winder from Underwood is programmed to wind 30 minutes clockwise, 30 minutes counter clockwise and then a three-hour resting period before the cycle begins again. This feature is favorable since most collectors understand the importance of delicate winding. Many experts believe the Underwood watch winder collection to be among the best on the market, however they are also among the most expensive.

The Rapport Company has been in the watch business for over one hundred years. Given the amount of time creating watches and accessories, it is no wonder they have some of the finest products on the market. Many prestigious collectors choose Rapport watch winders and consider them the best watch winders available. Rapport believes that the frequency, angle and speed of rotation are the key elements to crafting the ultimate watch winder. Along with high standards of craftsmanship, this company also believes in provided elegantly appearing cases for watch display and storage. This product also offers a choice of settings from a fast-winding mode to an intermittent mode with rotates both clockwise and counter-clockwise.

Eilux, the recently renamed watch winder from Everwell is considered an excellent choice as an entry-level or beginners watch winder. The Eilux is covered by a manufacturer’s warranty and is said to be a very dependable, although much less expensive than other brands, winder. This brand is programmed to wind in three directions: clockwise, counter-clockwise and bi-directional. It is important to note that the winder should be completely shut down before changing winding directions. One dealer likens this to changing gears in a moving car without stopping first. The factory default setting is to rotate bi-directionally for 24 minutes with a three-hour resting period before beginning the cycle again.

If you have a very large budget in which to purchase a winder and have a very valuable timepiece to store, a high-end watch winder can be a may be the right choice you. Although many of the best quality winders are pricey, brands such as the Eilux can be a good alternative to spending a thousand or more dollars. Precision in rotation is a critical factor and you should certainly take notice of the rotation cycles of any brand you consider purchasing.

Owners of valuable automatic watches obviously wish to protect their investment. Comparing the different brands of watch winders to find the best for your needs is important. Generally speaking, watch winder manufacturers create products based on different principles. It is probably wise to stay away from the cheaply made models because you run the risk of over winding your piece. The more intricately designed models may be significantly more expensive, however, you certainly pay for what you get in this market. To clarify, with a poor winder, your watch may even become disabled or damaged by over winding. Choosing a winder with finite workings is the best way to ensure your watch is properly wound.

Footprints in Antiquity and Timepieces

Benedict Hunter asked:

History is not only found in the moldy pages of history books, in the halls of great museums or in the pillars of citadel ruins. No, you can find traces to history in the most unexpected places. Perhaps, in an old desk covered in bills and papers that date years back. Or perhaps in a classic painting (even a reproduction), that hangs obscurely against the wall of a dimly lit hallway in your house. It could be so many things. Take a closer look and these items will speak to you and soon you will learn that there is more to antiques that what they seem at first glance.

The term ‘antique’ is derived from the Latin word “antiquus” that is translated to mean “old”. Just by word Etymology, we can surmise what an antique really is. In all simplicity, it is something old; something that has survived through the ages, something that has stood as silent witness to the events that have effectively changed the world and all in it. This is probably the main reason why people are drawn to gather and collect antique pieces.

Somehow an antique table, dresser, book, jewelry and others provides them with a look into how things were in the past. Owning an antique does not only mean owning a piece of time and history. It is also viewed as investment. The older the piece is and the better shape it is in, the handsomer its price will be. Antiques can be found everywhere, from specialty shops to auction houses and most of the time they are handed down as heirlooms – pieces that have been a part of the family or a part of its heart for ages.

Perhaps one of the more famous pieces of antiquity are antique timepieces. From golden pocket watches, ancient marble sundials to stately grandfather clocks that stand in attention against a great wall. It was the Egyptians who were first to grasp the concept of time. They were the first to build sundials. Sundials are timepieces that were made to tell time by using the movement of the great sun god’s chariot over the horizon.

During the Middle Ages, Tower clocks stood above towns and served to be a gentle dictating hand over the actions of the people of the towns and cities that it shadows. As clocks progressed, we saw the development of the mechanical timepiece. The first styles of it lacked the pendulum which was developed only in the latter half of the 14th century and it was in the 17th century that clocks started to have hands that were made to tell the time.

Auction houses usually features antique clocks from desktop size to grandfather clocks.

Some famous displays include a Louis XV Boulle bracket clock, with an auction price at $56,000. A carved column shelf clock created by Mark Leavenworth was auctioned at $53,900 and another finely crafted shelf clock made by Asa Munger went for $57,750. But the all time record high was on October 2000, for an 18th century mahogany American tallcase clock which fetch $611,000 at Christies Auction house.
